Staked is the eighth full novel and I ve lost count of the novellas The paperback version also has Prelude to War in the back of it which is handy because Staked makes sense when you ve read Prelude to WarJust in case you ve not read any Iron Druid it s a very sensible urban fantasy series set in the modern day I say sensible because the universe isn t too strange You can imagine it coexisting with the world we live in The action in Staked and the other Iron Druid stories is all within the bounds of plausibility in our world Possibly the only scene that would be hard to explain away happens in this book A vampire ambush on Atticus and some Rabbis that are helping him in Rome Even that gets a plausible explanation for its cover storynews report in the bookStaked sees atticus O Sullivan our 2000 year old Iron Druid fighting a personal war against vampires The war escalates than Atticus expects Atticus realises that as a conseuence he s moved away from the tenets of druidry However he manages to enlist help and deal with the vampires enough to end the war There are a number of interesting twists and turns not least of which what his old archdruid is up to and also Granuaile s adventures A number of other old friends appear too and all play a key role in the story There isn t any spare material here it all forms part of the narrative and is necessary In fact I think it will bear a second or third read laterI really enjoyed the story and if you like urban fantasy where the gods exist like Neil Gaiman s American Gods then this is definitely a series you need to go pick up

So far I have really enjoyed all of the Iron Druid series until this one It was a lot of pages of nothing just to wrap up the meat the story in the last 20 pages Staked is the wrong title for this book It should have been called MiscellaneousTo much back and forth between the main characters narratives to be anything substantial Hearne needs to go back and read the first books in the series and recapture what he did right in those Either that or change it to the Iron Druid and those 2 other guys Chonicles

Really enjoyed the whole series and this one was not bad exactly but felt a little tired Is it maybe time for Mr Hearse to write something newIt s interesting to read the reviews highlighting the anti fossil fuel chapter of the book I ll try to avoid spoilers by being a bit opaue but if you ve read the book you know what I m talking about Um HelloIs it really surprising that earth worshiping Druids are a concerned about climate change and b might be in a position to do something about it Frankly it reads false to me that Atticus is not willing to take direct action However those commenters were right to flag that sub plot as weak and frankly a jarring addition to the book with little or no emotional payout It s not weak because it addresses concerns over global warming it s weak because it was poorly written Fierce Druid or not I find it completely implausible that Granuaile would risk her life and the life of her hound on a morally dubious bit of gloating And yes that s all it was the ecologically benefial events had already taken place I expected her to regret the immorality of her actions as soon as she left but no instead she just blithely moves on As everyone knows even those of us with happy parental relations disputes with our parents are not put so easily aside
