This was a book that I came across by chance when browsing the translated fiction section of Waterstones and one which I initially reneged from buying given its length On reflection though I decided to buy it and thoroughly enjoyed reading itThe novel is set in Paris of the early 1960s and primarily follows Michel Marin a teenage boy obsessed with reading and baby foot a form of table football played in the bars and cafes at the time Michel s parents married in 1946 his father having been held in a POW camp for much of the war and despite being somewhat of an entrepreneur his mother s family look down upon him given his immigrant roots Through a visit to a cafe freuented by his older brother Michel becomes involved with a chess club run in the back room members primarily taken from those politically exiled from behind the Iron Curtain Through his friendship with these individuals in alternate chapters we become aware of their life stories the difficulty they faced while in their home lands and the reasons for their being in Paris these narratives interspersed with tales from Michel s own life usual teenage problems coupled with issues arising with family and friends related to the ongoing French Algerian conflictI have to say that I was engrossed in this novel from the start and found some of the stories from both Paris and the Eastern Bloc fascinating Given the book s critical acclaim in France I have no doubt that the finer detail of both setting and character is authentic and while one could perhaps argue that Michel is uite precocious particularly in his literary tastes knowing that France is still a nation that loves books this might only be because our society has dumbed down over a period of decades There are a few literary celebrities name checked in the novel Satre and Kessel to name but two and given their membership of the club I wonder whether the other Eastern figures are based on actual people I don t know anything about the Algerian conflict yet the effects of a colonial campaign rang true I also enjoyed the conflict of modernisation in the book with the tentacles of rock n roll enveloping Michel and his friends while his mother s family in particular tried to resist the need for change in the way they conducted their business venturesAll in all a book that I m really glad I picked up particularly given my desire to read translated fiction If you have the time to invest in a 625 page novel I d highly recommend this one
