free read Les Grecs ont ils cru a leurs mythes? Essai sur l'imagination constituante review Les Grecs ont ils cru a leurs mythes? Essai sur l'imagination constituante Ô eBook or Kindle ePUB Built up and changes over the centuries The style is brilliant and exhilarating Jasper Griffin Times Literary Suppleme. This is an English translation of Paul Veyne s Les Grecs ont ils cru leurs mythes Veyne states in the preface that he consulted Michel Foucault for much of this work which is apparent throughout the book as there is a profound influence of postmodernist ideas The book does not directly answer the titular uestion and it would be practically impossible to convincingly solve such a grandiose uestion anyway Instead it provokes the reader to think about the nature of truth and what ancient writers themselves thought about truth Each of the ten chapters could potentially be read as a stand alone essay but several themes are recurrent throughout The central one is that truth is a relative concept and different individuals and societies have different ways of arriving at what they believe to be true Veyne uses many ancient examples to prove this The work of Pausanias is used freuently to highlight how ancient historians conducted their work For instance ancient historians did not generally make the distinction between primary and secondary sources nor did they feel a need to cite sources for their reader They believe the authority for what is true rests in the fact that they themselves have written it down This makes the work of ancient historians distinct from what modern historians strive for and is part of Veyne s explanation of why writers like Pausanias and Herodotus could so readily include fantasical stories alongside historical events in their works Overall this is a fascinating read for any interested in mythology or the ancient world It is also generally applicable to the modern world and how we can still so easily mix fact and fiction in our everyday lives This translation is decent but the text can still be a headache to read at times due to the complex nature of the ideas at work here It is well worth the read though for an insightful look at myths and storytelling
