This is possibly one of my favourite books My dad bought it when I was younger specifically for one story The Brownie of Bladnoch because we live on a farm where the Broonie supposedly worked for a while Temperley is a fantastic storyteller He engages well with the Gallovidian landscape and has selected a good range of local legends and folk tales as well as re writing some better known stories like Sawney Bean in a fluid enchanting style which is accessible for readers of all ages Overall a fascinating and well written collection of folk tales from a rural area of Scotland steeped in history and legends

I love stories I like to read them and then make them mine telling them to friends and family That s how stories used to be told and I think that I might like someday to become a professional story teller This is a collection of fifty one tales They range from amusing to heroic to disturbing to grotesue I love myths and legends and folk tales best of all tales except for bible stories I love bible stories so this book was like a treasure trove It mixed folk tales and legends with chapters of history and biography It was a very convenient set up I am extremely interested in Scottish history I have some Scottish blood and so it holds a sort of double fascination I wouldn t recommend this book to all it contains some fairly gruesome tales and it doesn t gloss over some of the less reputable characters or details But taken all in all I think it would be okay for most people I thought it was good I ll give it three stars
