Did she let the story take on a life of its own and then realized she only had a limited number of pages to finish it up within the restrictions set by the publisher? I even have a suspicio

Black Douglas (FREE) The story in itself was not so bad What put me off was the descripiton of the heroine Over and over it was pounded into the reader that she had huge eyes an unremarkable face and mousy fly away hair Again and again we are told that she is not physically attractive What really topped it off was the constant references to her slight figure At one point she was described as having a boy's slim hips and the bosom of a school girl

What a shame that the ending was botched on this perfectly wonderful poetically written vintage romance the likes of which only Violet Winspear can pull off Did VW run out of time and slap on the ending under the stress of an editor s deadline Did she let the story take on a life of its own and then realized she only had a limited number of pages to finish it up within the restrictions set by the publisher I even have a suspicion that the ending was tacked on by a hack hired to finish what the original author could or would not uel dommage I still recommend it for fans of VW who need to feed their addiction for her uniue style of writing and ethereal world buildingA nurse and patient romance set in an exotic island where the sea is as gorgeous and inviting during a breezy sunny day as it is dark and threatening in a hurricane or during shark feeding time Black Douglas is the story of a big eyed waif resigned to a celibate life devoted to nursing as she does not believe she could ever attract a man with her plainJane looks She arrives on this island after a traumatic incident involving one of her young patients which we find out about during a fateful night where she and the hero are stuck in a cave riding out a fierce stormHer new patient is an autocratic tycoon ruling his ancestral island like a feudal kingdom VW loves her heroes being a throwback to historical piratesswashbuckling warriors ruling their own private kingdom like a nation state In the prime of his life with the world at his feet and engaged to a glamorous gorgeous international model an accident renders our hero blind so he has retreated in the seclusion of his family home where he tests the nerve of a succession of hapless nurses despairing of handling him Naturally our plucky little heroine meek looking but as spirited and feisty as she is loving and compassionate handles the injured lion and gains his tentative friendship It isn t long before she opens her heart up to him but the treachery of an oozy OM and mercenary OW threaten to destroy the seed of hope that has sprouted in her heart that the Black Douglas could ever possibly love his meek little nurseI would have loved an ending that would have tied up the loose threads of the story particularly the long coming confrontation between the hero and the OM a cousin of his who seemed to scheme to somehow rob him of his inheritance now that he found himself disabled A confrontation between the OW and the heroine would have been enjoyed as well since VW delights in writing dialogues that throw spears and our spirited heroine could have held her own There is also the mystery of the diamond earrings that the hero retrieves from the bank safe which the heroine believes are a gift meant for the OW and which play an important role in a tense scene involving hero heroine and the OM Most importantly the ending just glossed over the fact that view spoilerhero recovers his eyesight during surgery and wakes up to suddenly declare his love for the heroine despite the fact that everything indicated he was still in love with the OW and the heroine was just a stand in for his need to feel a woman in his arms again The OW meekly sailing away on her yacht without fighting for her man seemed very unlikely as well A meatier ending involving the convalescence of the hero and the inevitable confrontation to end this love uadrangle would have gone a long way to preventing the inevitable feeling that the heroine was second best hide spoiler
