Lightnin Hopkins Summary É eBook, ePUB or Kindle PDF By the time of his death in 1982 Sam “Lightnin’” Hopkins was likely the most recorded blues artist in history This brilliant new biography—the first book ever written about him—illuminates the many contradictions of the man and his myth Born in 1912 to a poor sharecropping family in the cotton country between Dallas and Houston Hopkins left home when he was only eight years old with a guitar his brother had given him He made his living however he could sticking to the open road play. I admire the research patience thoroughness and clarity Govenar put it into this long awaited book but lord it s dry for the first three fourths of the way Dry and repetitive I will never forget that Hops wasn t simply a country bluesman because it was hammered into my skull constantly true it s a point worth making about him and other players involved in the folk and blues revival The repetition might have been bearable with a modicum of humor and style but even a modicum there ain t so you have to provide your own I kept visualizing a slap fight between Mack McCormack and Sam Charters Howeverhoweverit s worth hanging in there for JJ Phillips idiosyncratic account of her Orphic affair with Lightnin finally some flavor and David Benson s recollection of his experiences driving road managing caretaking jousting and serving as a surrogate son for Hopkins during the final decade of Lightning s life I am glad Govenar published this book but it s not uite essential reading

There s a couple good anecdotes in here but overall this book reads like an annotated discography Lots of dates and names and addresses and catalog numbers precious little about the soul of man Which pretty well reflects the nature of Lightnin defiantly personal and idiosyncratic
